CELL PHONE AND BRAINS CANCER

The use of mobile phones is often referred to as one of the trigger caused a brain tumor. But a new research study published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute December 3 and found that the phone had nothing to do with the tumor.

Study conducted for 5-10 years involved 60,000 volunteers from the Danish, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. They use cell phones in the country where they reside.

Researchers said that cases of brain tumors in the study population in these four countries has remained stable. Decrease or increase in cases of brain tumors occur only in 1974 and 2003. While cell phone use increased dramatically in the mid-1990s.

Lead researcher Isabelle Deltour, PhD, from the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology of the Danish Cancer Society, said there was no trend of brain tumor incidence increased in the data observed from now until the year 1998.

They stated, there are several possibilities as the reason for the lack of connection between cell phone with a brain tumor. This could be due to an induction period associated with a brain tumor for more than 5-10 years, the increased risk may be too small to undetectable therefore can not be observed.

The study, they learned only in the brain tumors or cell phone users, so they said no increased risk of cell phone use to the risk of brain cancer.

Researchers said they did not observe how long the individual mobile phone use when they conducted the study. The study only see whether an incident of brain tumors.

Because cell phone use in the population is very high now, it may take a follow-up of brain tumor incidence.

U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated on their website that "according to a study, the cell phone has nothing to do with any health symptoms problems". The FDA statement was also supported by the Vice President of the American Cancer Society (ACS), Michael Thun, MD, who also expressed similar things.

Deltour and colleagues, studied 59,984 men and women aged 20-79 years diagnosed with a brain tumor. They said, if there is a link between brain tumors with cell phone usage, then it is not proven with numbers obtained from the research results.

Their findings that brain tumor incidence rates are increasing, stable or declining before the phone is consistent with a cell phone. What can we conclude from this that cell phones do not have any effect on brain tumors.

They suggested a study conducted within a longer time to mobile users who use it in a long time.
